Topic: Monitoring?

I'm a bit confused.  I put in my earphones and the mic is of course not being monitored.  How am I supposed to play along with previously recorded tracks if I can't hear myself playing along.  Am I missing something?  I think it's a great app... and well worth the ten bucks.  I'm just not sure how I can use it to record rhythm and then lead over that rhythm if I can't monitor the mic...

Re: Monitoring?

Currently, the latency isn't low enough to be able to monitor accurately.  That's a limitation of the iPhone platform.  The lowest buffer size allowed is 1024.  I use over the ear headphones and just leave one ear off.  When Apple allows lower buffer sizes, monitoring will become possible.

Re: Monitoring?

Or you can turn down the volume in your headphones until you can hear yourself.  Of course if you're using isolation headphones like the Shure in ear ones, then yeah, you'll have to leave one ear out while recording.

Re: Monitoring?

So is this still the case? You can't monitor the input while recording?

Re: Monitoring?

Can other people chime in with their experiences on monitoring input? In other words, hearing what you are recording through the headphones while you are recording.
I remember being able to do it, without latency issues, then it stopped working. Strangeness.

Re: Monitoring?

To record guitar, I use a Vox AmpPlug.  I split the output from this using a stereo 3.5mm to RCA cable; one channel goes to a monitor (e.g. the line-in of a stereo or guitar amp or headphones), the other channel goes into the Yellow RCA out of an IPod video cable (using another RCA adaptor) which in turn is connected to my iPhone.  This allows me to record and monitor what I'm playing.  To listen to the output from the iPhone/FourTrack, I connect the Red & White RCA plugs from the IPod video cable into the monitor device.  You need yet another adaptar to take the RCA outs from the IPod video cable and combine them with the split channel from the AmpPlug so you can use a single monitor device.

Probably clear as mud, but I'll assume that those that have persisted with trying to set up a mini recording studio with FourTrack know what I'm talking about.

Cables and adapters everywhere, but it works!

Re: Monitoring?

I use the Monitor knob and turn it up. It does make the Gain Knob on the layers adjust to the same level which is weird but it is the only way I have been able to monitor through headphones what is being recorded.  I have a presonus firebox ( although it caught fire and is in repair) with a mixer and it helps monitor input but does not work as well a I would like.  Probably a noob issue.
