Field Recording

With GuitarJack or a connector from KV Connection and an external mic, could I achieve recordings on the iPhone comparable to using something like a Tascam DR1?

As I understand it (and I don't understand it very well) the main issue is that a decent mic requires power that the iPhone can't deliver, leaving you the option of a very expensive condenser mic that requires batteries.. or something..
