A new, free update is coming for RiffWorks Standard v2.5 and RiffWorks T4 v2.5 users.
RiffWorks v2.6 for Windows has been given to beta testers. Sonoma's development team has been doing more MacOS testing than ever, and will be getting the MacOS build to beta testers this week. We are continuing to test on Windows 7, 64 Bit, Snow Leopard, and more.
What's New in RiffWorks v2.6?
- Added dragging layers between riffs.
- Fixed input effects panel drawing bugs.
- RiffWorks' RiffLink online collaboration network connection code has been rewritten and improved.
- RiffLink online collaboration loading and unloading has sped up tremendously.
- InstantDrummer session streaming during collaboration has been improved.
- Added option to turn off InstantDrummer streaming for those with slow internet connections.
- Improved window drawing performance on MacOS.
- Fixed subtle timing issue that would occur when riffs loop in the InstantDrummer and metronome. This was first reported by Doug Wimbish (Living Colour), who heard a timing error of less than half of a 1/128th note.
When RiffWorks v2.6 becomes available, an announcement will be made on our website, forums, twitter, facebook, and a special edition of the newsletter will be emailed. RiffWorks T4 and RiffWorks Standard users will be prompted to download the update when launching the program.
RiffWorks Line 6 Edition will not be offered this update, so RiffWorks Line 6 Edition v1 and 2 users should upgrade to RiffWorks Standard.
RiffWorks T4 users are encouraged to buy RiffWorks Standard now as RiffWorks Standard users will likely receive the free update first.
The new Latin Beat 1 RiffWorks InstantDrummer Session and Latin Beat 1 InstantDrummer iPhone App are now available. Latin Beat 1, from the Discrete Drums' EarthBeat Multitrack Drum Loop collection, features Latin inspired rhythms recorded by Greg Morrow (drummer) and Eric Darken (percussionist) at the legendary Sound Kitchen "Studio E" studio near Nashville. This InstantDrummer features an adjustable tempo, arrangeable 15 parts, effects and more. The RiffWorks InstantDrummer works great in both RiffWorks T4 (free) and RiffWorks Standard ($129). InstantDrummer iPhone App users can copy your drum song into AudioPaste enabled apps like FourTrack.

TV themes can be as inspiring and memorable as the shows they were written for, and this month brings us two incredibly talented composers. Dave Kushner is one part rock guitar god in Velvet Revolver, and one part TV composer for the FX hit "Sons of Anarchy." We met up with Dave in his studio to show him the new GuitarJack and ask him about how he's been using DrumCore and Discrete Drums. David Schwartz has written some of the most iconic TV themes in history, including the themes for Northern Exposure, Arrested Development, and 90210. David has been using DrumCore to lay down quick grooves and Discrete Drums for extra layers. Check out their individual interviews below.
Dave Kushner (Velvet Revolver)
There are alot of wannabes in the LA music scene, but Dave Kushner has rock in his veins. A veteran of the LA rock scene, Dave's credentials are as authentic as they come. A former member of Danzig, current member of Velvet Revolver, childhood friend of Slash, and fill-in guitar player for Weezer are just a few of Dave's accomplishments. Currently, Dave has began to do more TV and film work composing the theme for the FX drama "Sons of Anarchy" and several pilots. We had a chance to visit Dave at his studio in Hollywood to see what he's working on now and how he's been enjoying Sonoma Wire Works' software. "With DrumCore, it sounds great and you don't have to edit it much. You just throw it in there and it sounds great on it's own."

David Schwartz (TV Composer)
It is the goal of every TV composer to write one theme that is held in the public's memory and outlives the show it was written for, but for David Schwartz, just about every theme he writes manages to achieve this. Beverly Hills 90210, Deadwood, Arrested Development, and Northern Exposure are just a few of the timeless themes David's written that almost anyone could hum off the top of their heads. The keys to his success? Hard work, extreme talent, and the right tools. David has been using DrumCore and Discrete Drums products for a while now, so we called him up to ask how Sonoma WIre Works' software has helped his composing.
"I might start with just a two or four bar thing from Discrete Drums and write to that, and then add to it. Discrete Drums is just fantastic for that. The sound you get is a real drummer on real drums. It's a great way to write and it's very fast."
