To celebrate the launch of 15 new InstantDrummer Sessions for RiffWorks users, Sonoma Wire Works and Line 6 held a song contest called RiffRumble II in October 2005. Contenders submitted original songs created with RiffWorks recording software. The public voted for their favorite song and the winner was Cristian Mercado Rodriguez for his song Kring-Tone All RiffRumble II songs are posted on the submission page.

CRISTIAN MERCADO RODRIGUEZ INTERVIEW

CMR: I [have been playing guitar for 12 years]. I live in Mexico in the state of Puebla de los Angeles. M band is called Septimacasa, a rock pop band. We are recording our new album that [will launch soon]. Please visit us at www.krisrod.tk.

SWW: How long have you been using RiffWorks?

CMR: Approximately 3 months ago... I think it's amazing software 'cause we don't need live drums for recording our ideas, and we record easly and quickly. We can make a lot of style and rhythm combinations...,great drum sounds! I hope [Sonoma Wire Works] and Line 6 can add more and more InstantDrummer Sessions.

SWW: What gear did you use to create your winning song, Kring-Tone? What does Kring-Tone mean?

CMR: I always use my favorite guitar. It's an Ibanez JS1000bp, of course my appreciated PODxt Live (I really love it, great sound!!) and RiffWorks!
Ring Tone comes from my intro Riff and Chorus Riff, 'cause my friends told me that those riffs sounds like a mobile ring tone, and KRing Tone, of course, comes from my name.

SWW: Could you discuss your approach to composition?

CMR: Well, i think my approach to composition comes from many styles and of course many guitar heroes like Joe Satriani, Van Halen, Alex Lifeson, Tony Macalpine, and Greg Howe, but I really want to express my own sound and style. My approach is alternative/progressive/fusion instrumental rock guitar.

SWW: Do you think you'll post more songs to RiffCaster?

CMR: Yes of course. No doubt. I think RiffCaster is the only and the best way to share our music and share it with friends =)

SWW: How did you promote your song on RiffRumble?

CMR: Well, I really donīt know most of the people who cheered for me, but many of my friends cheered for me of course. I really appreciate it 'cause they really liked my song.

SWW: What InstantDrummers and Model Packs do you already own from Line 6?

CMR: Well, I have a few InstantDrummer Sessions, like Gas Up and Go, Alleycat, Heavy Core, Heavy Core Too, and my favorite, Funky Country. For Model Packs I have FX which is incluided in my POD XT Live.

SWW: Which Model Pack would you like as your prize and why?

CMR: It's not easy, but i would like Metal Shop 'cause it contains a lot of amps ... for rocking all night!

SWW: Which 5 Instant Drummer Sessions would you like as your prize and why?
I would like :
1.-Piccolo Rock 'cause it includes both half-time and full-time variations.
2.-Rim Ballad for playing ballads =)
3.- Odd Time Slink , change 4/4
4.- Great for Strumming, for rock a lot
5.- Train Comin', that dumm has a lot of ideas

The RiffRumble II runner up who has earned an honorable mention and some Sonoma Wire Works schwag is Gerardo (Jerry) Villarreal for his song called Human.

GERARDO (JERRY) VILLARREAL INTERVIEW

I was originally introduced to the guitar by my brother, who is an OUTSTANDING blues man, at age 10 (although I took it for granted and thought it was quite boring at the time). After about 2 or 3 more years, I started listening to Metallica, Oasis and Led Zeppelin (quite a mix eh'?) So once I started listening to all these excellent bands, everything just clicked! I knew what I was going to do when I grew up :). So thats basically how I started playing. As of now, I live in Monterrey, Mexico where music is starting to evolve and people are getting more and more into the real music scene.

I haven't really had a band that I could call mine. I always jam with different people and/or start cover bands to make some money and also get some live experience. I've played in various tributes, for Metallica, Megadeth, Pearl Jam and Stone Temple Pilots, and I've played in various state contests.

I've been using RiffWorks for about a year. Since it was released. I tried the demo and loved it! So I instantly bought the program. This song "Human" was recorded with a Taylor acoustic and a Jackson RR1 (for the heavy part). This is actually one of the most mellow tunes I've recorded (my sound just tends to sound a lil'bit more heavy ;) ), so I wasn't sure what people were going to think of the song. I'm glad people liked it!! This song was actually a jam.. Straight forward!! We just kept playing and playing all these riffs over and over until we memorized our jam, then went straight forward to recording it. Although the song was intended to be a bit happier, the end result was good enough, so we left it at that.. hehe To promote my song on RiffRumble, I told my friends at school and some other musicians to check out the site and see what they think of the contest. Some people just asked me a straightforwardly, "Where do I click to vote?" Some other people were checking out the other songs telling me how they were better than my own :\ hahah. So I'll keep on posting some songs in RiffCaster to keep y'all updated on what I'm working on at the moment. Thanks to all the team of Sonoma Wire Works for this wonderful opportunity.
