How can I hear other riffs I've made while recording current one? It seems like I can only hear the selected riff, I need to be able to hear for example the bass riff while I create the melody riff, and then do a lead riff while listening both of those. Is this possible? Thanks.

Rockitglider,

Playback should be simultaneous with the sound of the riff you are currently playing. As you click the record button, all of the layers in that same riff should playback unless you have them 'muted'.

A riff can be made up of muliple layers where each one is an individual instrument. RWS supports up to 24 individual layers per riff so if you have a couple of rhythm layers and a bass layer already laid down, they should be playing at the same time as you're recording your new lead layer.
Cheers!
Scott

And make sure you uncheck the AutoMute button

Hello,

Thanks for the reply, but this is what I tried to explain, I want to separate things into different riffs, and be able to have bass on one riff, and other guitars on another riff. I want to be able to record a new riff while listening to the previously recorded riff. Thanks,

If the other riffs are not muted you should hear them no problem, as Scott suggested make sure automute layers is UNCHECKED as well.

Simple as that.

There's maybe a misunderstanding over the terminology here?

RiffWorks isn't your normal linear recording package. It's been designed to break a song down in to chunks ('Riffs') because many songs are composed of repeating verses and choruses with the odd bridge/breakdown thrown in for variety. Why record five verses separately when you can do it once and then drop your recording in to your song structure?
Riffs are then subsequently broken down in to layers where one layer=one instrument.

Riffs sit together one after the other like the carriages on a train and as the song is played, the riffs play back one after the other consecutively.

I can't quite understand why you want to separate your instruments in to individual riffs as this will make your song play back with bass only, then rhythm only then lead only, one after the other.

Is this what you're after?

You can record more than one instrument in a riff and it's only then you will hear everything together as you record.

Sorry if it's me that's misunderstood but just keep firing questions and info back and we'll all do our best to help solve your issue.
Cheers!

I think that Scott's hit the chord on the head.

It sounds like what you're describing as riffs is what we refer to as Layers. As described, a Riff is made up of layers, so you can create your bass layer, your rhythm layer, your clarinet layer, and your duck call layer and then they will all play back together while your record your lead layer.

Also, be sure to pay attention to your measure count in the current riff or you'll be recording additional lead licks in a new layer. If you are still recording, a new layer will be created when the end of the current riff is reached and it loops (unless you turn on "Single Shot Record"). The only damage is that you waste a layer, but it can get confusing if you're jsut jamming with the record button armed :).

Hello,

You are correct, and I now realize that it won't do any good to separate into riffs because of the song structure. I guess I'll have to have bass layers and guitar layers in the same riff. I guess I'm just used to using all the other softwares out there. The only thing I cant understand then is how to get a rewire program to record with the riff, or does it record only on the song layer. Thanks again for the help you guys.

See ya, Rockitglider

Rockitglider,

ReWire will work on a per Riff basis with no problems. ReWire is a bit of a strange thing though, so bear with me... We consider ReWire to be a backup, so it doesn't record to a layer. Layers are things that have been recorded and won't change. Since we don't have any idea what the ReWire content was/is we just sync to it.

When you hit play in your Riff, we tell the ReWire device to play as well. It then gives us the sync'd up audio that we asked for and we mix it into your RiffWorks audio in realtime. If you make changes in your ReWire application, you will hear them instantly in RiffWorks.

To use RiffWorks with Reason, launch Reason after RiffWorks. Then, turn on the ReWire backup for the riff you want to have ReWire on. (That riff should be the currently selected riff at this point) Move your loop markers in Reason around to the section of the song that you want to play as a backup to this riff. That's it. Hit play in RiffWorks and you should hear and see Reason playing with you in the background.
