Sorry I just saw your question.
Seeing how the drive I was thinking of using at the time was USB and the PODxtLive is USB I decided not to record to the external (USB)drive.
However I have since gotten a firewire drive and when I get around to it ( been busy setting up a new system and just added the firewire drive to it last night) this will be the drive I use for external recording. What Dug said about you're not going to improve performance with your recording interface (the POD) and the external drive both sharing USB banwidth makes perfect sense.
So if your interface is USB and ya want to record to an external drive then go with firewire and at least 7200 rpm. The one I got is Acomdata and it is designed for the mini-mac but will work for anything. It connects using firewire and also has a USB powered hub which is handy. You should be able to find it for 149.00.

I've got a Western Digital dual option drive for back-ups. Ive never used it to record to but it is very handy it connects to both USB and firewire when both are attached it uses firewire by default and the usb becomes an extra jack on the front of it.
