Fairly easy setup, haven't perfected the hardwar with but works fine through the headphone out of the tone port UX1. Now I want to fool with a mic for vocals and my banjo......anyway I went to guitar center and asked the guy about a cheap mic and he start elling me that I need a phantom power supply and would be better off with a UX2 and show me some $150 mics. So I kinda tune him out.

Now what kind of mic can I get for around $30 that I can plug into the mic input just to fool around with, I guess it needs and xlr plug on the end huh? but there must be mic out there that will do this without a phantom power suppy right?

Carvin makes a decent mic, the M50, for $50. No phantom power needed and comes with a 20ft. XLR cable. It's $29 more than you want to spend (with shipping), but it will serve you better than most $30 mics.

Now is this what is referred to as a dynamic mic? I know that Carvin makes some pretty good stuff for a fair price, thanks

SteveCat, first off welcome!

A dynamic and a condenser work differently and sound differently...rather than get all technical and confusing I'll answer it this way...a dynamic looks like the kind you'd use on stage, a condenser looks like the kind you see in a studio...oh yeah and dynamics don't need power so they will work fine with a UX1.

For pure "fooling around" you can probably find a dynamic with a 1/4" plug at Radio Shack or Target/Walmart etc. for $20 or less that should work with the Toneport. Beyond that the sky's the limit (dollar-wise!).

Hope this helps,

Yes it is, and yes they do. JJ is right, you can get a cheapo from Radio Smack or even a Magnavox from Walmart. The best cheap mic I ever had was a $9 Sony. However, investing a little bit more in a Carvin or a Shure SM58 (some can be had for $50 on Ebay) will serve you better than a cheapo. You'll probably outgrow one of those fast especially with a banjo, or any acoustic instrument, since you'll quickly become frustrated by its sound quality.

Once you're up and running would you mind posting some music? Most people do metal/rock; I'd love to hear some bluegrass/banjo music.
