Ok, so the creative commons license is as good as a copyright? Or is that an extra step??

My basic understanding is that 'full copyright' gives you total control over what can and/or can't be done with your piece of work.
The CC licence gives you 'less' control in that it gives others the right to download, copy, file-share, trade, distribute, and publicly perform (e.g. webcast) it as long as they don't gain financially from it, they always credit you for it and they don't sample, build on or change it.
If you want to make money from your work, you need full copyright. If it's just for posting in RiffCaster, I'd say that the CC Licence does a an OK job of protecting you.
Cheers!
Scott

From the US Copyright office:

"The way in which copyright protection is secured is frequently misunderstood. No publication or registration or other action in the Copyright Office is required to secure copyright. There are, however, certain definite advantages to registration.

Copyright is secured automatically when the work is created, and a work is “created” when it is fixed in a copy or phonorecord for the first time. “Copies” are material objects from which a work can be read or visually perceived either directly or with the aid of a machine or device, such as books, manuscripts, sheet music, film, videotape, or microfilm. “Phonorecords” are material objects embodying fixations of sounds (excluding, by statutory definition, motion picture soundtracks), such as cassette tapes, CDs, or LPs. Thus, for example, a song (the “work”) can be fixed in sheet music (“copies”) or in phonograph disks (“phonorecords”), or both. If a work is prepared over a period of time, the part of the work that is fixed on a particular date constitutes the created work as of that date."

Read all about it here at the US Copyright office.

What the Creative Commons License says basically that you, as the copyright holder, are allowing others to download and use your song so long as you are given credit as the copyright holder and they do not make money from it. It does not diminish your rights as the copyright holder, nor does it prevent you from using it for your own financial gain.

Posting on RiffCaster under the CC license lets you share the music with clear intent, and it also establishes a point in time (i.e. when you post it) that you could theoretically use in a copyright challenge. The summary...it's a good thing!

I read your info, and saw that your first concert was an Ozzy one :) Thats awesome, my first concert was Ozzy as well. In fact, it was on January 5th, at Verizon Center (Washington DC). Thats the only concert I've seen so far, but it was life changing!

Hmmm. I saw ozzy a couple of times I think. I can't really remember........
"I think the problem might have been, that there was a stonehenge monument on stage in danger of being crushed, by a dwarf". "I really think you're making a big thing out of this". "Making a big thing out of it would have been a good idea".
