Hey guys quick question,

I recently bought Addictive Drums, it's on sale through the end of the month at Guitar Center for only $124.50! Love the program and I love using riffworks. I've read on the forums that I can rewire it into Riffworks via Reaper.

I've since done that successfully and have watched the meters light up in Riffworks on the Rewire interface.

My question is this: How do I now record those drums in Riffworks? I have only pressed play on the beats in AD, I never dragged anything into the Reaper timeline.

Do I need to set up anything in Reaper? How do I set it up so the drums don't play until I hit record in Riffworks? Would somebody mind walking me through a step by step process of how to do this?

Thanks in advance for your help and consideration,

Sincerely,

jtman

Hopefully someone will appear and answer your question soon mate, I can't help I'm afraid but at least we will have bumped it to the top of the list again. Maybe Rich (blue4u) knows the answer to this one, I think he does a lot of Rewire/Reaper stuff with VST drummers etc :)
No-one remembers what you do or say. Everyone remembers how you made them feel. Allegedly !!!!

Not shure how to help you either but if it is anything like reason just set up your drums and mix to riff it should put in in rw then but the problem is it will be 1 riff with all your others guitar bass ect.. I think it matters how long the riff lenght is to so for 8 bars you will have 8 bars so on and so forth.

Hey guys,

I guess no one else uses AD with RiffWorks? Fairly simple question yet hardly any responses, (not even blue4u)???

VST drummers like AD and EZDrummer should be a fairly common thing to use...

Oh well, thanks to the few who did respond...

jtman (guess I'll start using reaper with AD)

I use ez drummer with rw all the time using the free version of friuty loops as both a rewire(when I use there presets) and as a vst when I feebly atemt to play drums.
your question did not refer to how others did it but how you wanted to do it.. and for that I don't have an answer for you. this is what you said.
My question is this: How do I now record those drums in Riffworks? I have only pressed play on the beats in AD, I never dragged anything into the Reaper timeline.
so the only answers I know is to either mix down the whole song with your drums or mix to riff each individual part. but I would suggest toing all the drum parts first then playing your other instruments.

Thanks for your reply vad1er, I appreciate your help,

I guess I didn't mean to phrase my question in that manner. I didn't mean to imply that that was the only way I wanted to use my software.

Vad1er, could you please describe with a little more detail how you use your VST drummer? How do you actually record the drums into Riffworks? I understand how to mix to riff but how do you syncronize it so it is exactly in time with Riffworks?

Thanks,

using Fruity loops as a rewire is how they get syncronized but when you do this they are always in the rewire device when I mix down then the drums are included.
When I run it as a vst it is much harder to sync because you have to hit record and play at the same time..So you really can't syncronize them this way.. Although I got really good at timing by creating an empty 2 bar riff at the begining to be able to switch to my other program. I rarly use this method though unless I am actually gonna play the drums.. I don't know if this is much help.. let me know.

It is my friend, thank you very much...

I guess the bottom line is their is really no easy way to use VST drummers in RW yet.
Hopefully that will change soon. Thanks for your help

Oh one more thing be very carful when using Fl as a vst make sure you close FL up and switch to another vst before closing rw.. Or it will give you hell.

Ok... this is how I got it to work. Apparently, RiffWorks plays VST plug-ins but not VSTi, so you want another application to play the VSTi plug-in and shunt the effect over to RW - in this case via ReWire.

Remember, RiffWorks is your ReWire Master so, it absolutely positively has to start up before the ReWire slave application.

1. Open Riffworks. Click on Drummers, then ReWire. (You may want to unclick InstantDrummer).

Next, you need your ReWire device as a slave. I use Reaper.

2 This part configures Reaper as a slave as the default is not to be a slave - you only need do this once:

a. Open Reaper. Open Options / Plug-ins then check "Check for ReWire mixer/device on startup (and automatically enter slave mode if present)"

b. Restart Reaper

c. Click on Options / Plug-ins / VST and re-add the VstPlugins directory - which (in my copy) disappears when you enable Reaper's ReWire slave mode.

d. Rescan the plugins.

e. Close the Options menu. If you want to feel better, restart Reaper.

This next part you have to do each time.

3. On the Master slider, click fx. It should go green and open the FX window. In the VSTi selection, Addictive Drums are there. Set up the beat, time, etc within AD. Click the play button.

4. From Reaper's control bar thingy, click the play button. You should hear the drums from within RiffWorks, and see the Reaper levels move in the RW Rewire window.

It acts like a drummer from within RW now. Hitting record from within RW works.

I just tried it, it worked.
