Just courious as to the specs some of you guys are running to do your audio recording with. My poor Vista laptop just gets slower everyday. My old machine with XP and half the specs still smokes my Vist PC no matter how many things I turn off, Disable, Defrag or whatever. Riffworks works on it ok it just drags along though just like all the other programs.

Vista is a resource HOG!!!!! It is the worst OS ever IMHO!!!!! Only thing you can do to help with Vista is add as much ram as you can Bro....cuase you gonna need it.

I have no problem with my Vista machine, but then again I have 4GB of dual channel RAM. :)

My basics are:

Duo Core Intel E6850 @ 3GHz
4 GB RAM
500 GB drive @ 7200 RPM
250 GB drive @7200 RPM
Riffworks Standard
Pod X3L (acting as main soundcard)

I would think any decent dual core CPU and 2 GB ram should do the trick.......but I could be wrong.

I'm using an iMac G5, on of the older models without the built-in iSight camera.
It's a modest stock setup:
1.8 GHz, 2GB RAM, 250GB HD.
The only improvement I made was maxing the RAM, which helped a LOT.
I'm still using OS 10.4.11, since all my audio hardware and software works fine right now. Plus, I don't have the $$ for the 10.5 upgrade.;) Although every time I "upgrade" Quicktime, I run into compatability issues with drivers and such.
I'm using a Pod XT Live as my interface, and it's working out well. I don't use software VST's much for serious recording, too much of a load on my CPU, but they're fun to play around with.
That's about it!

AMD Quad Phenom 9750 2.40
2 Gigs 533Mhz Ram
Windows 7 Ultimate
120 Gig 7200 HD
200 Gig 7200 HD

Like Flex said, Vista is a resource hog and I hate it. Microsuck seemed to lighten up Windows with Windows 7 and stated in a commercial that they made Win7 faster. FASTER...isn't that the whole point?

Anyway, at work we have two levels of machines with slightly different specs.

Sup level:

Intel Dual core 3.0
4 Gigs Ram
120 Gig HD 10K RPM
Win Vista

Runs like a champ

Staff Level:

Intel Dual core 2.5 Mhz
2 Gigs Ram
80 Gig HD 7200 RPM
Win Vista

Wished I would have ordered everyone with the same specs as the Sup level at work. So yeah, I hate Vista with a passion unless I have a some good hardware behind it. I think the RAM and HD speed made all the difference in the world concerning Vista.

Are we seeing a pattern with Microsauce?

Win3.1= WTF
Win95= Was an OS that's it
Win98= Sucked
Wind98 SE= Stable
Win ME= Sucked
Win 2K= Was an OS that's it and sucked for gamers.
Win XP= Stable
Win Vista= Sucked
Win7= TBD

In the future= Microsoft goes open source.

Yeah that was kinda my point just forgot to mention that. It's just a way Microsoft keeps recreating itself just the same as car manufacturers come out with new body styles every three years. Madonna uses this same technique by coming out with shocking new wardrobes or outfits or publicity stunts to keep people interested.

That's the problem with the economy too.. This is a throw away society.. For example All my buddies buy new super computers every year.. They buy a bunch of high tech home user garbage.. Oh don't get me wrong they are really fast. Then in 6 months to 2 years the crap starts breaking down.. So they go buy another set of "home user garbage" My old pc was/is a dual zeon duel core workstation with a 512 workstation graphics card. I payed 3 times the amount they payed for one of there home user crap systems.. BUT it still works and I have had it about 5 years now. The only reason I upgraded was for school (CERTAIN MOTHERBOARD TECH NECESITIES) ANYWAY as soon as the nephlahiem (i7) zeon processors come out I am ditching this i7 chip(motherboards are universal now).. I am already searching for the right WORKSTATION graphics card too. Basically the sacrifice is reliability over speed not that you loose alot of speed anyway. I use server 08 and can make it look just like vista..but why do that to hog my system resorces? on my server 08 boot my system is the most stable.. when I get the xeon cpu I and the workstatin video card I wont upgrade for another 5 years if all goes well. Our society is all about NEW, NEW, NEW, FASTER, STRONGER ect.. Give me decent performance, stability and reliability any day and even though I spend 3 times as much on my pc for (reliable tech).. my turtle will keep on races long after your rabit has fallen asleep..lol America must change the way it thinks.. I bought my first home when I was 21 for 32,000(cash from insurance sttlement).. Sold it 10 years later for 110,000 with 8 percent interest over time. I bought a new home for 132,000. It isn't the best but I own my home because I bought what I could afford not what I wanted. So it is payed for not really owned buy the bank.. I will eventually sell and upgrade again. But one thing is for sure unless some natural catastrophe happens I will not be homeless.. Anyway my Conservative 2 cents.

Well here is the deal, not only with America either. The world banks are trying to enslave people by keeping them in debt. That's what the whole world economic crisis is all about really. Keep getting you to buy (as you said) BIGGER, BETTER, STRONGER, and whatever. Buy buy buy, the newest model, the newest color, trend, or whatever.

It's sick, just sick IMO! When there are people starving, sick, oppressed. If you can't share then no one will have anything.

Ok, I'm done ranting back to the super duper computer talk.

Sorry carry on...

Ui, a "how big is your rig" thread. Since i've buyed a new computer, here's my system:

AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+ (dual core 3.06 GHz)
4 GB RAM Corsair DDR2 (800 mhz)
Windows XP Service Pack 3 (with 64 bit patch)
160 GB Harddrive (8000 RPM)
ATI Radeon 4870 1 GB DDR3 (1050 MHz)
Power supply unit 400 watt
Line 6 Tone Port UX1

I've payed 249€ for the Computer (Motherboard, Core, Power supply and Harddrive), 189€ for the Graphics Card and 60€ for 2GB of additional RAM.
No imagination is a limit I can´t afford.

It says Phonia, not Phobia. One is sound the other is your Girlfriends Mum.
