At the moment there's no way to shorten a riff to get rid of any gaps. You have to know what bar length you need before hitting 'record'. However, once you've got that sorted ...
... three possible solutions:
one is what's called the 'lead-in' riff where you can record two chosen riffs one directly after the other. If you want Riff3 to lead smoothly in to Riff4, you select Riff4 and then choose Riff3 from the drop down menu in the 'Lead-in' function. When you hit record, RiffWorks will then immediately record Riff3 but won't stop until it gets to the end of Riff4, effectively recording right over the 'join' between the two riffs.
the other is to use the 'Song Layer' which is basically one big long riff that sits on top of all other riffs in the Song Line. Again though, this will only work if you've got your song structure sorted and dragged in to the Song Line.
the only 'round about' solution is to save out the riff you want to change as a .wav or a .ogg file, trim it up in an audio editor like 'Audacity' and then re-import it in to RWS using IntelliRiffer (which you can search for in these forums). This is a pretty fiddly and convoluted way of doing it though.
Best of luck with what you're trying to achieve. Let us know if you have any success.
