Can someone please tell how to hear riif1 while recording riff two?

I think this will be the key to my universe as instant drummer is way cool and I've got some groovy lines mapped out but can't seem to get past square one when it comes to recording.

Thanks

From what I gather it cannot be done within RW itself. May I ask why you want to be able to do this?

Ok so I'm looking around on here and find songlayers and can now endlessly record over riff 1 cool! So why would I need the other riffs if I can't hear them while recording other stuff that goes with them?

Why can't you just do that within the riff itself? Just record what you want extra on riff 1 itself....then....duplicate the riff(note the duplicate button)or just duplicate the original riff1 and it becomes riff 2....feel free to delete layers or mute them or pile on..save the songlayers for notes you want to carry into other riffs, and or vocals...because the songlayer lets you record over all of the riffs in the timeline....oh yeah...ROCK ON BROTHER!!! :D

Read your original post again and see why it can't be done. At least not that way. After recording riff1, try and record on riff2 while hearing riff one, it can't be done, no way, no how.

Now, if you record riff1, then use the songlayer to record over that riff then it can be done that way, but you'll be recording on the song layer and not in riff1.

First off, why can't you hear what you've just recorded to play over it? Unless you were using the song layer first?

Is that what you did?

A piece of advice, If you are recording on the song layer and your not finished with your song, I would wait to finish the riffs first, then add them to the song layer, then record your other parts on the song layer last. Or the lead will lose it's initial spot in the song and come too early or late depending on what changes you make to the riffs on the song layers after laying down the lead.

Hope this makes things easier for you?

Your right Mud...but I can tell he was just missing some basic functions of Riffworks...I remember how I was when I first opened Sonar for the first time....talk about lost with enough compounded questions that eventually in time became clearly illogical to the recording process with that software.

That is why RW rocks to me...its soooo simple that the flow will come quick for him. Imagine the great music we all missed out on through time because of how difficult or expensive the recording process was. My playing has improved so much because of the process and trying to nail it right. I remember after chasing down and figuring out how a function worked in Sonar...that I chocked it up to "knowing how" because I no longer felt inspired to record, like it felt to cause me to click the software on in the first place. Even though I now know that program pretty damn well and can perform functions in it that even mimic the way RW works with a "skies the Limit" ability with what i can do, AFTER... setting it up to do that very thing....setup setup setup...lol

RW is so kick ass for this because its the first recording software I use to write with...and practice with. By the time I get really grooving in my moment....no stop to setup required...click and your recording the idea. I remember trying to do that stuff with micro cassette recorders and sterile sounding drum machines while I practice and wrote, so I knew exactly what i wanted to do when I had to fire up and set up the Beast computer to record.

I'm not saying anything that most who might read this don't already know...but I remember those epiphany moments I had when I first bought this software. I felt this guy just had one of those moments...and i wish him many more. :D
