Hey All, can someone Help me use my Mackie 1202 with Riffworks?

What is the best way to connect my trusty old Mackie 1202 8 channel mixer
to my soundcard, Emu 24bit 2-inputs 2-outputs I have the typical inputs,

One or two 1/4" guitar inputs and one or two xlr Microphone.

Right now I am using the two outputs of the sound card to drive two Roland monitors,
and the inputs coming from the Main Out on the mixer.

I also have 4 channel inserts on the back of the mixer, but do not know how to configure
properly.

Thanks in advance.

i've never used that soundcard, but the best possible input would be a low-z (mic) input. Without knowing that mixer, does it have 2 xlr outs? if not the 1/4 inch would be the only other option, which would be main out's from the mixer as either 1/4 inch to the 1/4 inch on the soundcard or rca out to 1/4 inch into soundcard - 1/4 to 1/4 being the best option of those two....

the channel inserts would be a send/recv (tip-ring-sleeve i would guess) that would allow you to go to an effect processor and back with (1) 1/4 inch (tip-ring-sleeve) plug - (the other end would normally be (2) 1/4 inch plugs - 1 for the input of the effects unit and 1 for the output of the effects unit) -- should be pre(before) the eq on the channel so your eq changes don't effect the send to the effects unit (compressor/verb/delay-etc.) the channel insert's are only needed if you are using "outboard" effects or signal processing of the microphone or instrument you are mixing with that channel.

hope that helps!

because you only have a 2i/o card it's going to be a pretty simple setup. you could try connecting the Alt 3/4 outputs to the soundcard inputs. this way the only input that goes to record are the ones that you hit Mute Alt 3/4 on--this just gives you some separation between possibly noisy signal sources. depending on whether or not you use Hardware Monitoring in Riffworks you can either select Alt 3/4 as a monitor source on the mixer (no hardware monitoring) or not (hardware monitoring.) this should avoid the combing effect caused by mixing the direct signal with the Riffworks signal. to connect the soundcard output to the mixer you have some choices but i would probably go with using one of the aux returns. Tape in is another option which won't use up one of your input channels but i like the aux return because you have a level control that's easy to get to. you could also bring it back in on one of the stereo channels but i don't see the advantage and you risk a nasty feedback loop if you accidentally hit the Mute Alt3/4 button. i've done just about every setup you can do with a 1202 but it's been awhile--let me know if you have any other questions.
