Im trying to decide whether to buy the line6 edition or the standard one.

For an extra $30 i'd be tempted by the better customer support, amplitude effects and the flexibility of using it with other hardware. But only if im not sacrificing integration with my guitar port.

When it says "works seamlessly with compatible Line 6 devices " what does that mean? does the standard version not work as well with the guitar port?

John

It includes all the same main features as RiffWorks Standard, the same number of free drummers, and the same 60 day free trial of RiffLink. The difference between the two versions is RiffWorks Line 6 Edition works seamlessly with compatible Line 6 devices only (GuitarPort, PodXT, PodXT Live, PodXT Pro, and now TonePort UX1 and UX2), while RiffWorks Standard works with all ASIO and Core Audio devices (including the Line 6 devices listed above). RiffWorks Line 6 Edition does not include IK Multimedia's AmpliTube LE plug-in. RiffWorks Line 6 Edition (v2) works with the additional InstantDrummer sessions from the Sonoma Wire Works store only.

I use the new standard version, and use nothing but my GP with Gearbox and all works great. I have tried Amplitube and can verify it works as well.........the main benefit is not being tied to Line 6 hardware, and the inclusion of Amplitube as you previously stated.

Go ahead and go standard, you will not be disappointed! Plus not having to deal with the Line 6 support side of things makes it all worth while.....LOL

Shred's right...

I use GP plus Amplitube and it all works great. The only difference with RWS is that GP has to be run separately and it takes a few goes to get used to not closing GP down when switching between RWS and GP itself. Minor detail though.
Cheers!

You have to run GearBox as a separate application for both RiffWorks Standard and RiffWorks Line 6 Edition. The integration is basically the same. The main difference is that the Line 6 Edition ties your version of RiffWorks to your Line 6 device (license-wise).

RiffWorks Standard also supports VST effects on the input like Amplitube LE (which comes with it). RiffWorks Line 6 Edition does not have that feature.

Dave,

I take it you are referring to this (from the Riffworks Guide section online):

"Control amp modelling plugins by using the AMP tab. Clicking on AMP the first time will show a popup menu of available plugins, as well as options to set the VST plugin path (windows only), rescan for plugins, or get more amps from the Sonoma Wire Works store (coming soon). When an amp plugin is selected, it automatically opens the user interface in another window. You can close the interface and the amp will continue to be heard, unless you uncheck the AMP power button. "

Can you put any VST effect in there (i.e., not just an amp sim)? Also, can you add a VST effect in that slot to a previously recorded layer?

To me, this would be a reason to choose Standard now over Line 6 Version.

Thanks.

Bender,

That is exactly what I'm referring to. When choosing to ship a standalone version of RiffWorks, we knew that users would need some way to listen to and record tracks with amp modeling. We include a copy of Amplitube LE with RiffWorks Standard, but you can use other VST effects on Windows or AudioUnits on MacOS. You can put any VST effect that you want in there, but it will be recorded to disk that way. And you can't add a VST effect after the layer has been recorded. I'm sure you're asking why and for that I'll have to provide an answer up front. There are actually two reasons...

1) VST effects (specifically amp modeling stuff) can take a lot of CPU. If we ran the VST effects live for every layer, you would probably run out of CPU capacity after about 4-6 layers. This just isn't a good situation. People would start to wonder why they could only record a few tracks before their computer starts slowing down and glitching the audio. Recording the VST effect to the hard drive is a way to prevent that situation entirely. There is only ever one VST effect active.

2) When collaborating with other users over RiffLink, or just traditional song sharing, every collaborator would need to have all the exact same VST plugins or the tracks would all sound different. There is probably a way around this in the future by bouncing RiffLink tracks to disk with all their amp effects on and using that as a RiffLink layer, but that kind of thing can become cumbersome to implement and manage. (What if the user who has the effect wants to change the amp settings or different VST settings? What if he wants to remove the amp entirely, does the layer go back to a traditional layer? What if he deletes the VST plugin that was running on that track? Can he ever change the effects?)

Just a little too much to deal with right now. We might allow arbitrary effects placement and usage some day, but for now, it records the VST effect to disk from the input channel. Still opens up a wide array of new sound options though.

Hands down the Standard version is better .......no doubts!!!
I too use GuitarPort and GearBox have had no problems whatsoever with the Standard version running side by side with GP and GB.....and less installation headaches with Standard then with the Line 6 version!
