So I was out amp shopping today...........

I had sold my Behringer a month or so ago cause it was collecting dust. I pretty much play with my GP and GB. Then just the other day I had really good offer to come out of retirement and play in a cover band with a cast of old school rockers like myself. Nothing more than bunch of us getting together to bang out a few tunes for fun every so often, maybe book a few gigs where we can.

Then I remembered.....no amp. So I am looking for something in the 2/12 combo range....maybe a half stack. But nothing too crazy $$$ wise, my wife will kill me. So far my candidates are:

1. Line 6 Spider III HD 150
2. Marshall MG250DFX
3. Crate FlexWave FW120
4. Line 6 Flextone III XL
5. Randall RG200DG3 (played this one this morning, and it was kick ass!! On sale for $539.99 too)
6. Crate GTD120

Any thoughts or suggestions? I want somthing that will rip and tear, but also have sweet clean channel. If I could I would get the new 5150 III, but $3,000 is too rich for my blood.

I'd hold off on any Spider amp purchase. There's a big rumor going around of a Bogner/Line6 Spider Valve amp coming very soon, September. A few european retailers already have them listed on their websites.

GuitarSlinger is correct. Line 6 is buzzing like a mad hornet. Link:

If your're going to use a MFX device, consider an Atomic. Even the 112-50w Atomic blowns most 212's away. Link:

I played that Randall 200w combo yesterday........and it was a monster. If I get a combo it has to be closed back cab. I am kind of getting stale on the Line6 stuff, to me it all sounds the same. I am looking for something different.

I am really interested in hearing some Marshall stuff......but I am having a hard time shaking the sound of that Randall from my head.

Gator, if we get gigging I will tape a show for you.......LOL Unless you want to come up and see one in person in Toronto or maybe Winsor or Sarnia.

I have a Fender Hot Rod Deville 212 60w combo with Groove Tubes. Awesome amp. It sounds like 100w to me. The PodXTL sounds really good going through the power amp only.

Ahhh I knew you were a good guy Bobbo. This amp kicks but in the blues to rock but not for metalheads. Here's a clip of me and mine with the Podxtl.

Never been disappointed by a Marshall. Well worth the investment.
Cheers!

I own an Atomic 112/50w (which is designed for MFX devices) and a PODxt. Here’s a link with samples played through an identical setup.

I have to admit I am really tempted by the atomic amps......would the POD then take place of my guitar port? So the same tones I record with can be my live tones....and my live amp can be my recording amp with riffworks?

Shredrex, here is a sneak preview of the new amp coming from Lin6 – introduced by Dave Mustaine of Megadeth. Here a link to the page with video:

I think you'll (and many others) be interested.

Yes! However, volume levels do effects tone somewhat. The most experienced working musician I know is Karl Houseknecht (I think he preformed the samples on the Atomic Myspace site) who can be easily reached at the Unofficial Atomic Amp site here:

He’s a nice guy and an Atomic enthusiast.

Gotta love Dave.......interesting amp. I could do with out the led red on the front....but I bet is sounds deadly.

Notice the 5150 and KranK amps in the background......I am still hopin got find a good used 5150 combo somewhere......I really want a good closed back combo. Closed back is the key for me.
