Some people call it pop, some call it soda, some call it Coke no matter the flavor or brand. I call that syrupy sweet, calorie laden, rot your teeth, make you belch carbonated beverage that I love so much, soda - when speaking in generic terms. However , I only drink Coke Classic. I hate it when I order Coke and they bring me something else, and I know it. Some establishments will say, “We have Pepsi. Is that ok?” And I reply, “No, it’s not ok. Just bring me sweet tea or water.”

Here is a map of the US that shows the breakdown of what this tasty beverage is called. Click on a state to see the breakdown by county. They left out the choice of soda-pop.

I have no idea what it is called outside of the US, so enlighten me and others.

Now excuse me as I am off to get a cold soda.

Well I'm in Georgia, so everything here is referred to as "co-cola", even if it's not.

Interesting fact bluesydude, you know up north they have no idea what sweet tea is? Order a sweet tea north of the Mason Dixon line and you'll get the stock answer, "we don't have sweet tea but I can bring you regular tea and some sugar". It takes way too long to explain that sugar won't dissolve in cold water, which leaves you with a mass of sugar at the bottom of the glass.

"Ugh, no thanks - just bring me a Coke"

"Is Pepsi ok?"

yeah, soda or coke. i grew up in boston. when i moved to fla. people called it pop. confused me.

i'm a coke drinker when i drink soda. the thai restaurant around the corner here gives you a 6 1/2 oz bottle of coke when you sit down! haven't seen them in years.

here they drink sweet tea and milk tea. simple syrup is the way to go.

Interesting how things have changed, when I was a kid in Florida it was always called Coke...in college Marketing we even went through this type study, which is where I learned there was a term "pop" :)

You can see where the yankees have moved in and now it's soda down that way (not to mention liberal in those southeastern counties...I wonder if there's a political affiliation vs. "what you call soda" study out there?). I don't find sweet tea much down there either...hmmmm somebody come up with a conspiracy theory about that!

One of my favorite memories of the 5 years I spent in Kansas was when my dad first came to visit, and we went to the store and bought a couple Cokes. The lady asked "would you like me to put your pop in a sack?" and I looked at my dad, who's eyes were wide and I said "hell yeah, put him in a sack!!!" :O

Huh, this as kinda interesting, in a strange way. :) I'm from western NY (towards Buffalo) and my family has always called it "pop". I didn't know it as anything else (ok, I know, I didn't get out much then). But now I'm in the Nashville area and everyone calls it soda or coke. I have gotten weird looks a couple times when I've asked for "pop" and they respond, "You mean Coke?". Uh... sure.

It's funny how it's different all over the country!

Well here in Scotland we have many names for it - none of them being soda lol

Luggi, ginger etc

So i would say can i have a can of ginger please and the response would be what would you like then followed by can of coke ta

So there are many names here in Scotland for it - i only mentioned two.

Its a bit like in the US u guys say chips - well to us chips are what you would call French Fries - we would have steak and chips.

Chips in US terms are known as crisps here

Funny how many things so common in everyday life take on different meanings around the globe lol

I'm a coke man my self and Nehi Grape . Up in upstate NY we call it soda, pop.... or whatever flavor you want ... if you say sprite, that includes Siera Myst and vice versa. You can even ask for a Dew and that will do..muhaahhaahahaha! Now chips on the other hand depends town by town..... if i go out of town 15 minuts you might find chips as a field buffet of cow chips... they smell great but i havent tasted them.... however if they are liquified than forget it ..you dont want to even smell it! Muhahahahahaha!

Hey Mickey - slightly off topic here, sorry guys, but you do realise then that you are originally from the same place where God was born, George Lynch? :-) He too is from Arizona lol. Useless info I know but thought I would drop that in lol.

Tater chips - is that an abbreviation for Potato Chips?

We would just ask for a packet of crisps lol

God aint the world a strange and wonderful place lol

England...we call coke, coke and pepsi, pepsi. Pop is a generic term for any sweet fizzy drink, it's not used much now; although if you have a hangover someone might ask if you've been 'out on the pop'; I think that's meant to be ironic. Thankfully, beer seems to have universal meaning.....

Most important !!!

Now I've emigrated to FLA from UK I must remember to never say "I'm just going outside to smoke a fag" !!!!!!!!!!!

I have nothing against gay people but I do like a smoke :)
No-one remembers what you do or say. Everyone remembers how you made them feel. Allegedly !!!!

We always called it "Soda" where I grew up, just north of San Francisco. When I lived in Illinois, they called it "Pop" which I thought was weird and kinda bubblegum-ish. Then living in New York, it was "Soda" again and all was right with the word. Then I moved back to California and eventually settled in Portland, Oregon many years latter where they call it "Pop" here too. But I don't even drink Coke/Pepsi/RC etc.... or Sprite or 7Up or any kind of Surgery Soda water. I usually just drink water or IceTea.

On a side note about Sweet tea: I had never heard of it before a few months ago when I met a girl from the south who described it simply as Ice Tea with Sugar in it. I was like, "You mean like Snapple or something?" "No, not at all like that!" was what she a two other people told me. Latter I asked my neighbors who are from Texes to make me some and sure enough, it tasted just like Snapple to me. Ice tea with Sugar in it. Then I said, "Hey this does taste just like Snapple!" and Then my neighbor said, "It does not, Snapple's got fruit juice in it!" I didn't know what to say. Sure some Snapple drinks have Fruit juice in them but you can get them with just straight tea and sugar in them. To which my neighbor replied that he had never had that before and suddenly the whole thing came into picture. :)
