Colin, just memorize the quarter note(4th note) symbol all rest is simple and related.
quarter = solid roundy with a vert line or a golf club
if the roundy is hollow and has a vert line its double the quart i.e a half note.
if there aint no vert line its a whole note.
if the vert has 1 flag then its a half quart i.e 8th note.
if two flags 16th and so on.
if the symbol has 3 with it its a triplet and if a dot , it's a dotted whatever note.
no need to memorize it at all, just use it for a day or two and it would be second nature to you.
