The nut on my Mex strat is loose, which is fine as long as the strings are in, but the movement does mean that over time it doesn't line up properly and I have to nudge it back into place. Are they normally glued in and what kind of glue should I use?

Actually, when you glue an old or new nut in place, minimal is better. You want to use as little surface area as possible for the glue to secure the nut. This comes particularily in hand when swapping the nut out should the need arise.

2 small dots ofsuper glue or nail glue, each on the ends about 1/8 in, possibly one in the middle also. As they used to say in school, "a little dab will do ya"

Thanks guys, I'll maybe try a few drops of superglue. I'll certainly think about the graphtech nut though as a long term mod...and I might fit one on my new guitar as well. Should I get one with the slots already done or do it myself....or get a tech to do it?

yeah, I've heard that too... very small amont of wood glue. The point being if you ever need to break the bond you don't want to ruin the slot in the repair process by ripping out the slot - water soluable even is a consideration. Just as long as its enough to hold the nut into position so its not sliding about.

disclaimer - I'm not a luthier tho. Tim takes immediate residency on that I guess.

I'm pretty new to guitar repair but when I repaired a completely broken headstock on a classical it was recommended to only use Titebond Original and so I did. Wood glue is the way to go imo since the nut is a part that will need to be replaced over and over again.
