Here are some live clips that seriously kicks ass and defines certain aspects of live music for me:

The blues: The first one is a live clip from French television with Jon Spencer Blues Explosion. I don't know diddely squatt about what good blues is supposed to be but this guy is so intense that he scares the bleep out of me. It's a total kickass performance, nut cracking experience. The band plays in a total trance at the end! It's two songs in a row so the clip is a bit long but worth watching. Who the bleep is Clapton? :

Trash metall: Next one is the total opposite of the first one. It's Megadeth performing Lucretzia at the Roskilde Festival (which I didn't go to, I honestly regret it today). This is a punch in the face with razor sharp trash metall. Megadeth was at it's absolute best. The song is not that complex but everything is delivered with ultra sharp attitude and precision which makes it lethal. No stupid tattoos, no spandex, no posing, just trash metall up your ass. Dave Mustaine delivers the best metall rythm guitar in the world here, sorry Hetfield, you have always been second to Mustaine:

Rock'n'roll: The last one is a classic. The Cramps plays at the Napa State Mental Hospital. This must be one of the coolest clips ever, you tell me who's in the band and who's a patient. Everyone just goes gazonkas! Enjoy:

I bumped into these clips on youtube some time ago... IMHO these are some of the best vids I have found on the internet that give a glimpse at the roots of rock:

Son House

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QwjGytOVVQA

John Lee Hooker

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2EHWujXubNM&feature=related

And, then theres R.L Burnside.. One of my favorite bluesman - just him and his guitar talking about when he first played live.

More of RL and other great blues guys can be seen on this video can be found here:

This Derek Trucks live solo on Desdemona is mind blowing to me - especially when he transitions seamlessly to slide around 2:09.

And this Danny Gatton one always drops my jaw

Metallica was always overated in my book.. I was not ever a really big fan although I did really like the songs sandman and One..
But Syphany of Destruction was the bomb in my eyes...
I liked alot of bands that never got the publicity.. Saxon, MSG ect...
But then again I have never been the mainstream type..
While most people were amazed with stevie via and Eddie vanhalen,
I was listening to Zappa D tune his guitar and murder people's music...
And I am also a big Yankavick fan... Funny bleep!

Not like I can play or sing like any of them so my position really don't mean jack.

Here is a blind and incredibly talented guy, Raul Midon. He uses a slap technique on his accoustic guitar. A true inspiration!

AC/DC, TNT, 1976

This is a live TV clip. Although you can never be shure, this might partially be a playback, who cares, the intensity is amazing!

Listen to Malcom Youngs rythm guitar... powerful.
Bon Scott explodes through the TV screen.

Totally amazing!
