Interesting to see them getting a toe-hold into this market space.

Singing a tune into a microphone as part of the arrangement is very intriguing. I'm a Mac user and use Garageband here and there, but I have friends that use Windows that could really use something like this. Very cool. $30 isn't bad at all for something like this.

LOL.
well, Garage band is a peice of crap anyways. no one in the right mind would ever use it commercially.
and this microsoft product..... well, i have not downloaded the trial, but it has "Midi sounds" written all over it.

but uh, for backing instruments that i dont own, i think i will stick to my Digi Xpand 2, and steer FAR CLEAR of this weird thing.

if you sing into the mic, and it does backing for you, that means it does pitch detection. if your singing with a friend (most people not in the audio world will do this, trust me) its going to badly screw up everything.
Celemony's genius man who made melodyne is the only guy to crack polyphonic audio to be broken apart, and even that is not out yet.

Dunno what M$ researched over here, finding a company that has already made this years ago (pgmusic BIAB) , tie'ng up with em and then launch as a breakthrough?.

I played with it for a while and it seemed a good thing for kids as introductory tool or whoever needs some kind of accomp/songwriting ideas for their solo instrument.

it did tracked the guitar quite a decent bit (monophonic). Like play some melody and it renders some chords that can sit with it. However at starting you have to record with just the drums

It can at best serve as a basic foundation tool for finding some backing progressions for a melody etc.

A nice fun toy but lacking too much currently for serious work.
I do recommend the free 6 hour trial to everyone though.

Edit: Just checked it again and you can do retakes.

Sony's Acid Express is a much better GB challenge and it's free.
