Spalted maple top! The dark veins are caused by a pattern of rot or bacteria in the wood. A very interesting wood choice. It's essentially rotten wood but it sure is beautiful :D

Nice choice with the bigsby too!!!

That guitar is great! Kudos to the owner. But I think such a rockabilly style is begging for a flammed top, something that is really flashy, like a flamed pink or flamed orange. But to each his own. I don't know alot about spalted maple, is it rare/expensive like say a hawaiin koa top?

Thanks! They have their own patented compensated nut. The neck is a one piece solid rosewood with a seperate rosewood cap for the fretboard. As you can see its only finished at the headstock, the rest is gunstock oil and wax. It also has a basswood body with maple cap, but since I ordered a solid color you don't see it.

Nice clean looking setup Evan. What are the lights on the top of the PC case? Temperature display?

redbaron wrote:I really like it! It's particularly good for Southern Rock, I'd say. Because of the strange body shape, modern Explorers by ESP etc seem to be built for Metal mostly. This one here, however, ist rather faithful to its 50s/60s Rocknroll roots.

As with many Epis, the wiring and the PUs could be better though. Do check the toggle switch for crackling noises when you switch PUs; do play with the volume knobs and see how they take away treble. Re-wiring and a new PU really help!

I play the Explorer a lot, I like the feel, the fretboard, its solidity - and the fact that the body is so wide that it completely hides my beer belly :)

This here I played mostly with the Explorer:

I was looking at a epi 'goth' explorer today... I also looked at the gibby and the epi korina... I liked the goth the most... even though it looks retarded. I think I will buy it then upgrade the naughty bits ;)
