I wonder, those of you that use fender trems, how do you set them up? Do you prefer floating tension for free trem action or do you tighten the springs so that the trem plate is against the body for better tuning stability?

Saw this clip with David Gilmour, now that must be a floating setup together with a pitch pedal of some kind. Totally awesome! What also suprised me is that he is using the bridge pickup for this, my first guess would have been the neck pup.

Floating trems are the shizzle for playing and recording....alone in your private studio......but if I was to play live again anytime soon, it would be locked down.....the reason being if you break a string with the floater, you are now out of tune and have to end the song or stop playing and if your the only guitarist, those are both bad options....you can't go on playing being that far out of tune....doesn't matter which string breaks....you are still WAY out of tune.........just my opinion though...

Also with a floater if you do a lot of double stop bends and such like I do.....the other strings go in and out of tune.....now most folks won't hear the subtle pitch changes but it drives me nuts! So now all my trems are locked down with 3 springs, but I am thinking of going back to 2 springs. :)

+1 for that advice, I played live gigs using a Strat with a floating 3 spring Bigsby tremelo and had so much aggravation with it going out of tune and the band having to stop playing if I broke a string, because it went so far out of tune. I swapped it for my Tele that I've had ever since, that's about 35+ years now !!!!

Well a vote for the floating trem. If you are gonna lock it down you may as well just go for a hardtail. Mickey and Bill are right about all the problems. but Hendrix managed, and being able to take the pitch up as well as down is kinda neat. If you are not intending to play live...float...Ali did! :)

Pure magic :) David belongs to a very small group of guitarists that know when NOT to play. Not a single note is wasted and his phrasing is the best there is IMO. I love how he captures this massive space around the music. Nice! Thanks for sharing that

I use a W.D trem stabilizer on my Ibanez low pro bridge..you can break a string and the other strings stay in tune..you can tune the low e down to d with no other tuning ajustments..string bends are no problem...slightly stiffer tension to work the trem, but nothing you cant deal with..i lock all my strat trems to the body with 4 springs..better sustain and sound in my worthless opinion...
