I love the fact that all the deeper cable channels are now showing series just like the major tv networks. It makes for much better entertainment. HBO was really the pioneer here I guess. Some of the earlier shows I remember, that were not "family friendly" so to speak, were shows like 1st and 10, Dream On, Arliss, and The Sopranos. All HBO I think. So I guess we can thank them for paving the way. Since then, Showtime has come around to the idea, doing great things with shows like Dexter, Weeds, Californication, and now Nurse Jackie (not a bad show so far). Of course, other channels like USA, Discovery, and FX have all jumped on the bandwagon as well with hits like Monk, Pitchmen, Sons of Anarchy, Jericho, Ice Road Truckers, and, of course, Parking Wars (there's one that came completely out of left field). What's next? We follow a group of homeless people around with cameras for six seasons? "Catch the all-new TNT show Cartpushers, next month, only on TNT".
One that I started watching last season was Z Rock on IFC. It's a pretty cool show about a Brooklyn rock trio (Z02, a REAL working NY band), and their search for fame and fortune. They do ok as a rock band, but not well enough, so they play kids birthday parties during the day (as Z Rock) to pay the bills. The show centers mainly around them and their manager. Their manager, Dina, is Joan Rivers' niece, and she's always calling in favors to her Aunt to help the guys. Last season, they almost had a record deal, then the bass player ended up sleeping with the producers wife (at the request of John Popper, who promised to tear up his contract with them, as Z Rock), and the deal was blown.
This season, the boys are back (I'm glad to see) and up to their typical nonsense. Dee Snyder is back as Paulies (the lead singer/guitarist) "rock and roll Yoda", and Joan Rivers has again appeared (as well as Melissa Rivers, who's still mad at her cousin Dina for blowing her boyfriend in the 9th grade). Looks like it's shaping up to be anther fun filled season!
Anyway, if you haven't yet seen the show, I'd suggest first trying to find and view the first season before tuning in to the 2nd. It's one of those shows where everything builds on from last week, and it helps to know the story from the beginning. In the meantime though, you can check out the bands webpage at
www.zo2.com. And if you're in the NYC area, you can always go and check out a show, as they really are a working band, and are not too shabby either.
