I love the fact that all the deeper cable channels are now showing series just like the major tv networks. It makes for much better entertainment. HBO was really the pioneer here I guess. Some of the earlier shows I remember, that were not "family friendly" so to speak, were shows like 1st and 10, Dream On, Arliss, and The Sopranos. All HBO I think. So I guess we can thank them for paving the way. Since then, Showtime has come around to the idea, doing great things with shows like Dexter, Weeds, Californication, and now Nurse Jackie (not a bad show so far). Of course, other channels like USA, Discovery, and FX have all jumped on the bandwagon as well with hits like Monk, Pitchmen, Sons of Anarchy, Jericho, Ice Road Truckers, and, of course, Parking Wars (there's one that came completely out of left field). What's next? We follow a group of homeless people around with cameras for six seasons? "Catch the all-new TNT show Cartpushers, next month, only on TNT".

One that I started watching last season was Z Rock on IFC. It's a pretty cool show about a Brooklyn rock trio (Z02, a REAL working NY band), and their search for fame and fortune. They do ok as a rock band, but not well enough, so they play kids birthday parties during the day (as Z Rock) to pay the bills. The show centers mainly around them and their manager. Their manager, Dina, is Joan Rivers' niece, and she's always calling in favors to her Aunt to help the guys. Last season, they almost had a record deal, then the bass player ended up sleeping with the producers wife (at the request of John Popper, who promised to tear up his contract with them, as Z Rock), and the deal was blown.

This season, the boys are back (I'm glad to see) and up to their typical nonsense. Dee Snyder is back as Paulies (the lead singer/guitarist) "rock and roll Yoda", and Joan Rivers has again appeared (as well as Melissa Rivers, who's still mad at her cousin Dina for blowing her boyfriend in the 9th grade). Looks like it's shaping up to be anther fun filled season!

Anyway, if you haven't yet seen the show, I'd suggest first trying to find and view the first season before tuning in to the 2nd. It's one of those shows where everything builds on from last week, and it helps to know the story from the beginning. In the meantime though, you can check out the bands webpage at www.zo2.com. And if you're in the NYC area, you can always go and check out a show, as they really are a working band, and are not too shabby either.

Yea, that show looked like it was pretty funny in the previews I saw. We were going to start recording it to watch later, but financial woes have forced us to down grade our Direct package and now we don't get IFC, or much of anything else worth a dump anymore for that matter... The kids have some shows recorded and said it was the funniest show they've seen, next to some show called Robot Chicken.. Maybe it will come out on DVD and I can catch both seasons that way. :/

I watched the whole first season and was on pins and needles awaiting the 2nd... hilarious.....I can't wait til Sundays now......

The funny thing about Z-rock is that it's totally unscripted....they make it up as they go along....I mean they have a general idea what they want to do but it's off the cuff and hilarious....and the band are ALL great musicians. Ya gotta love that theme song....

Mickey. Yeah, I was hooked in from the moment I heard the theme song.

"We're a brooklyn band!
It's rock and roll we live
But to pay our bills
We gotta play for kids!"

I'm sure they script plenty, you know, for the jokes and whatnot, but yeah, you can tell that the storyline seems to be just unfolding as they go. The cheeseburger scene that opened this season seemed off the cuff to me. These guys aren't "actors", and you could really see Paulie startin to get pissed about his cheeseburger!

I've not seen Flight of the Concords yet. I'll have to check one of those out. I usually like the shows on HBO. I didn't care for that recent animated one though. Life of Ted or something like that. I got through the first epidode with the hooker bit and wasn't very impressed. Never watched any others.

You guys watch Genes show? My wife and I are kind of embarrased by the fact that we watch it, but we do. I'll eventually stop watching it though, as it's pretty much the same thing every week. Storys in real life don't happen as quickly as storys that are made up. I'll get bored with Gene this season probably.

This coming season is apparently the last season of Monk. I've watched Monk from the beginning. Hopefully, they are going to resolve who killed his wife this season.

Yea, It's probably nothing they haven't seen or heard already anyway. The ones watching it are 17 and 13, they talk about it all the time with us, so I'm not to worried, or should I be?? :/

I'll definitely check out Entourage and Flight of the Concords. Actually, I've always wanted to check out Entourage, as it has Kevin Dillon in it. He was always one of the underrated actors if you ask me. He was great in The Doors. I think the only reason I never watched it, was because I was upset that I didn't get to catch the first season.

I have comcast, which comes with "on demand". I'm sure most major markets have something similar these days. Anyway, with on demand, you can often go in and watch ALL of last seasons episodes for many shows. If I had my dithers, I'd NOT have to wait until next week to watch the next show. This way, if I'm diggin it, I can watch the whole season on a slow tuesday if I want.

Mickey, up here in GA, Z Rock is available three days early through on demand. I think episode three became available last night. If you have on demand, it's in cutting edge/ifc free/series/zrock I believe.
