That is equivalent to, 1 child dying every 3.5 seconds, 17-18 children dying every minute, and over 9 million children dying every year; mainly the result of poverty, hunger, easily preventable diseases and illnesses, etc. In spite of the scale of this it never achieves headline coverage. RIP Michael Jackson sure, but I've never understood how our society got so messed up that one death can generate so much attention and the others none. End of political message. :)

People love to worship other people. We've been doing it for eons. We don't hold that all life is created equal. In the western world especially, we treat entertainers like gods. The kids dying in Africa, South America and elsewhere are off the map as mere statistics compared to someone who provides entertainment value and has star status. We don't have to look far to see that value system at play. This has dominated news networks for 2 days now!

That said, Michael was an AMAZING entertainer and musician on just about all fronts. I'm not a huge fan of everything (Off the Wall and a few others I like) but as a musician my hat is off to this guy for what he created. RIP and be well wherever your journey takes you MJ...

He got Eddie Van Halen to play lead on beat it which caught my interest. Being 12 or so at the time with the metal explosion I never payed much attention to him. The Thriller video was ground breaking when it was released, and probably sure up the fate of having the biggest selling album of all time. I even like a few Jackson5 tunes.

I respect the music, but not the man. He was a messed individual to keep it brief.

Actually when I think Elvis I think peanut butter and banana sandwiches (which are awesome btw), gospel music, drug abuse, and of course the fat jumpsuit. I should give him more respect though - he virtually created the genre that I write almost all my songs in, and every rock musician whether they want to admit it or not was influenced by him either directly or indirectly.

It seems Michael Jackson was just another in a long line of people who collapsed under the weight of their own genius. It's an interesting part of the human condition that people who are born with extraordinary talent tend to lead proportionately dysfunctional lives. The more brilliant you are, the less you can relate to your fellow man.

Extremely creative people have a higher rate of depression, addiction, and mental illness like bipolar disorder. It's almost as if the universe has a system for leveling the playing field for humanity. It's as if the supreme being (pick your favorite) sits on high and says, "ok, I'm going to bless you, child, with an ability to play the piano like no one else that has come before you. You will be known worldwide, and millions will worship you, but the price is that you will be depressed, and while you're loved the world over for your talent, you are cursed to feel ostracized by your fellow man. You will die a horrible self-inflicted death, and you will never complete your life's work".

It's times like these I'm glad I'm only kind of creative. :)

To me his dancing was more captivating. I have seen some live stuff and the way he moves is just unearthly.

I grew up listening to his music, I watched the show as a kid, etc, etc, etc. Michael Jackson was indeed talented. It wasn't until 93 or so, when I saw The Jacksons, an American Dream that I realized that his talent was FORCED upon him. Here was a kid who just wanted to go outside and play, but his father drove him like a sled dog to be great. It's obvious that HE has no talent of his own to share with others. I say we get a van full together, go out to Vegas, kidnap him, teach him to tapdance, and put him on display 5 nights a week. Yeah Joe, we know you just wanna go take a nap, but we're really in need of some good geriatric entertainment.

Since I saw that TV special, most of MJs songs always ring bittersweet to me. The kid grew up with a very skewed sense of reality, and if he did turn into a molestor, then it's something that Joe should blame on himself, if he's not too busy patting himself on the back for "creating a musical genius".

Personally, I don't think MJ molested anyone. I think he was probably just a lonely guy who needed to have a family of his own. No one would have thought it odd for him to sleep with his own kids (that's SLEEP, not molest). I still get the boot from my own daughter sometimes in the middle of the night. Of course, the whole point is to scootch with mom and dad, but dad quickly finds another bed.

But that's your OWN kids, and that's where the line between normal and weird occurs. And the people who let their kids stay at Neverland ranch AFTER MJ had already been accused in the past, should be ashamed of themselves! To me, this REEKS of "hey, let's let our kid stay with him, and maybe MJ will molest him and then we can sue. Ah the hell with it, we'll sue either way". I'd have been AFRAID to stay at MJs house when I was a kid! "What the hell is that? AGGGHHHH!"

Honestly, I was saddened to hear he had died. And not just because we won't be able to make Michael Jackson jokes anymore. He WAS an icon, plain and simple. And when an icon dies, it tends to make people reflect on their own lives in sync with that of the icon.

I took out a paragraph here where I talked about some celebs that were blogging about their grief, because I didn't want to offend any of the many celebs who truly are mourning. Suffice it to say, if you had nothing nice to say about the man while he was alive, then you shouldn't be shouting nice things about him from a pedestal now that he's dead. Enough said.

While it's true that Michael Jackson will get no peace from the press, even in death, Ryan O'Neal and Farrah Fawcett's family have been blessed with some relatively quiet time to mourn her death.

Don't sugar-coat it beau, tell us how you really feel :P

Seriously though, I agree with you - the guy never had a chance at a normal childhood. It made me think of how lucky I am to have grown up in a household with two parents who were loving and supportive of everything I did without trying to live vicariously through me. When you grow up the way Jackson did, it's almost impossible NOT to turn into a total freak. Honestly I wouldn't be surprised if they started digging up body parts behind the ferris wheel at Neverland.

I agree with Jesse too - Off the Wall was a totally kick ass album.

It isn't, concerning drug abussement. You wanna know people who actively and at very high rate took drugs, either their alive or not ?

- John Lennon
- Paul Mc.Cartney
- Mick Jagger
- Brian Jones
- Keith Richards
- Jimi Hendrix
- Janis Joplin
- Jim Morrison
- Elvis Presley
- Buddy Holy
- Kurt Cobain
- Beck
- Lain Stanley
- Slash
- David Bowie
- Ozzy Ozzbourne
- Toni Iommi
- Jimmi Page
- Daron Malakian
- Serj Tankian

I could continue this list for eternity, and you would be surprised who else to find on this list, even people you don't expect to take any drugs now, or in the past...like Angus Young (smokes weed, that'S why he hates alcohol), Kirk Hamett and Metallica Singer (took Amphetamines at the start of their career). It is well knowen that all group members of Rolling Stones, The Beatles and Jimi Hendrix Experience had drug partys at their houses.

Actually, the reason why they are so good musicians, is directly related to their usage of drugs...drugs make you think abstract...;)

Extremely creative people have a higher rate of depression, addiction, and mental illness like bipolar disorder.

Directly related to drugs...:D

Oh, and if you think only the crazy musicians would do it. Mariah Carey does, Eminem does, Rihanna does, Lady Gaga does, Justin Timberlake does, Dr.Dre does. I'm pretty sure that the musicians that aren't good, are thoose that don't do drugs, like Yngwie Malmsteen or thoose new guys with the stupid "dance with somebody" song...and yeah ABBA...:D
No imagination is a limit I can´t afford.

It says Phonia, not Phobia. One is sound the other is your Girlfriends Mum.
