Anyone pick up DT's new album yet?

I get the feeling, and i have been gettin this with some of their older albums too, that DT uses the same riffs twice. I totally felt like i had heard riffs in "The Shattered Fortress" in previous DT albums. Or maybe i'm just crazy

"Shattered Fortress" is the final chapter of Mike Portnoy's AA Twelve Step Suite. It has all the main riffs from the past chapters to kinda sum up everything. So no, you're not crazy. :) Here's a link explaining the idea of the AA series:

But, I do believe that Portnoy re-hashes a lot of his drum parts. Don't get me wrong, he is one of the greatest drummers ever. It just seems to me that he uses a lot of the same fills over and over. I know most of everyone here are guitarists, so maybe you don't know what I'm talking about (I know I don't even know what I'm talking about half the time!).

To sum up their new album.... it's great! Once again JM's bass is buried in the mix which really disappoints me, but all in all, a pretty solid album. I really love the first track though. That intro is Heavy! w/

I always wondered about Myung's bass myself?! Why do they hide him? He's so freakin' amazing and even during live shows he buried beneath a wall of guitars

Also, do we REALLY need to hear so much of Portnoy's singing? He steps on James' toes and doesn't mix well IMO. He should join a punk band on the side if he wants to sing. His voice is not melodic like James and for me, it's distracting and jarring.

Otherwise....this album is amazing and chock full of DT goodies as usual :D

...and one more thing since I'm feeling so opinionated lately :D They should stop trying to produce themselves and hire a proper Producer already!

Hey! When you're as good as these guys are ya gotta get a LITTLE criticism once in a while :)

The best part of Petrucci and DT et al is those hilarious parody videos on YouTube.

I'm excited i get to see them live for the first time in August. I'm not a fan of MP's vocals either, doesn't fit well.

I feel the lyrics on this CD didn't match up with the genre of the instrumentals at all haha

The only time I really liked Mike's vocals were in "The Dark Eternal Night" and "Prophets Of War". I'm not a huge fan of his vocals as well, but when used in songs like those two, it fits really well.

I also like John and Mike's production style. That is one of the reasons why the band's sound is unique. I do think they need to bring in some co-producer or an 'outside ear' though. The problem with John and Mike producing is that all your hear are the guitars and drums and Jordan Rudess solos.

Another thing I noticed was that the kick drum is louder and more out front than the other drums. It drives me nuts!
