I'm another fan of David Gilmour's style. It's what sounds right for the song. It isn't about speed. To me, speed is just "gee-whiz look at how many notes I can play in .0001 of a second!" That's only impressive if you're equating guitar playing to a high school track meet. Or a wild west shootout. Technique, accuracy are great things to have, but speed for the sake of speed, not so much. I once saw a video of Petrucci from Dream Theatre doing a live cover of "Comfortably Numb". It was fine until the point at which he started trying to make it sound like "Flight of the Comfortably Numb Bumblebee", at which point I stopped listening. This doesn't mean I don't think he's one hell of a guitar player. He doesn't always play that way, and often his choice of notes boggles my mind, and not because of the speed at which it was played. To me, the interest level is vastly more important than the shock&awe rating. Finally, everyone is free to like what they like, regardless of what someone else likes, so I never take this so far as to say anyone who prefers relentless "proof of virtuosity" exercises is off the mark. Rather, to each their own. Peace.

I think it is safe to say that people who love "shred a million miles an hour" music are mostly the ones that can actually play that fast. I myself prefer melodic type solos mostly to listen to so that is what I have learned to pay over the years. It's all in what makes your ears happy. I can totally appreciate the musicianship of the extreme shredders and am in awe of the technical aspect of it. I try to dabble in the shred arts but since it isn't what really makes me happy, both playing and listening, I will never master it. The same goes for the shredders. They probably like to play some blues, funk, etc. once in a while but it isn't thier passion. The most important thing I think is to develop your own unique style and sound. Once you have that it's fun to morph into different types of music to keep challenging yourself.

The moral to the story for all the young shred heads out there is sloooowwwww down once in a while and make each note sound like it is the last note you will ever play. Quality is always better than quantity. Rawk on!!!!

What's that smashing pumpkins song? There is a (repeated and memorable) part in it where the guitarist ( corgan or iha? ) just plays one bend and it's friggen EPIC. It isn't a solo bug a great illustration of less is more.

This is why I love Joe Walsh. Imaginative, simple, and will absolutely rock live. Incredible style without triplets. Curious what does Slow Hand mean?

`Slow Hand` as in Eric Clapton? Think they were referring to his lazy, economical and `natural` technique. Like old `SpiderHands` McGee.
