No you silly poot!!!! The fatter the strings the better your tone....you know that!!! I didnt realize we had so many limp wrists in the room!!!! I will send you and mick a set of super slinky 8"s like I used to play before my fingers would span all six strings!!!! BUHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!! :D

Speaking of which....I didn't think anyone over the age of 12 still bought Super Slinks???? WOW!!!! But your right to each his own.....it's just if you don't agree with me....your totally WRONG!!!!!! BUAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!! :D

I believe tone is in your fingers a lot more than it is in a set of strings (of any thickness). And I don't use Slinkys, I use Elixirs ;) You can send me a box of them kthx.

Buying a thickass set of strings because you *think* it gives better tone is kinda like the 50 year-old bald guy who buys the Corvette - it's all about compensating for *short*comings. MUHAHAHAHAHA!! :P

Blaaaah!!!! nonsense!!! Of course tone comes from your fingers....comes from the amp too!!! But I most certainly can tell the difference on my guitars...also...how do you keep your fingers from bending off the fretboard....they are just to light!!!! I find that tens are borderline....I just couldn't see playing 9's!!! or God forbid 8's!!!! With those really thin gauge strings you most definitely lose definition in your sound!!!!

I've never used 8's. I have 10's on my trem guitar and 9's and 10's on each of my hardtails. But Tonny Iommi used 8's tuned down to C#, wow, talk about floppy. He also sets his amps bass control to zero, not usually a recipe for a heavy tone.

didn't know he used 8's....that's probably cause he had no finger tips!!!! As far as the Bass on the amp...This isn't hard to believe....those tone controls on those Marshall's don't do anything anyway and those things had loads of bass...especially when cranked!!!!!!!!! :P

Yup, Elixirs all the way with me. Played GHS Boomers for a while, then played Daddario for a while. But I was sold on the Elixirs after the first set. Then when they came out with the 'Custom Light' set, well, I've not bought anything else!

I must say though, that the Daddarios seemed to break less often than anything else, but since I started playing on the Ztrem by Ibanez, my strings ALWAYS break right at the bridge, so fixing a broken string is as simple as loosening the lock nut, winding a little bit of string off the tuner, and reinserting it into the bridge.

The big thing though, is the lack of rust. I HATE rusty guitar strings with a passion! I cannot stand for my fingers to smell like rust after I've played a guitar. They just don't go together if you ask me. The elixirs I have on my acoustic have been there for over a year, and while they've become a bit dull, they still stay in tune and sound good! Yeah, they start losing their snap after 3 months or so, but hell, that's better than 2 weeks!

I figure, when I get around to replacing my bass strings, I'll probably fork out the extra and get the Elixirs. But I'm not scheduled for a bass string replacement for at least another 5 or 6 years.....

Elixers all the way around,Especially acoustic..Bright and crisp, and they last a long long time. 10's at least for me,I'm thinking about going to 11's cause I beat the crap out my guitar when I play,Especially live, adrenenil is flowing,I hit harder live..I just can't help it.

One thing about heavier strings,One or Two magnets per string,It's about basic electricity, bigger wire passing by a magnet =More voltage=more gain and tone in that section of the tone chain. That volume and tone knob work great too.

I hate breaking strings,Thats why i have wrap around bridges.

Time to change bass strings....Elixer it will be.

pooterpatty wrote:To defend Mickey, I'll say that I use Elixir 9's. However, that's on a 25.5" scale guitar. On smaller scale guitars (like the Taylor, which is a similar scale to a Lester) I'll use 10's. It's about being able to bend the strings without getting carpal tunnel ;) So what's this now - the fatter your strings are the bigger your manhood is? Gimme a break! :P

Regarding the Elixirs, I haven't been impressed with their acoustic strings. I've heard from a lot of people (and had the experience myself) that they break way more often than they should. Luckily, the electric Elixirs don't have the same malady. Give em a try Mickey, you'll like em - no matter how many times you wrap em around the post :)

For me it's about tone. Fatter strings give way better tone or "fatter" tone. Plus I find fatter string or heavier gauge strings are easier to grab, plus I have jumbo frets on my strat. If you have good guitar tech he can bow your neck and give you some relief in the strings so they aren't that hard to bend.

On my strat I use Ernie Ball Power Slinky 11-48 an use 9-42 Super Slinky's on my Ibanez as mentioned before.

Speaking about strings, has anybody heard the rumor that Eddie Van Halen use to boil his strings to help in stretching and longevity? Which brings my to my next point. It's always good to stretch your strings out evenly when restringing your guitar. If you don't then you can cause weak points in the string and they can break easier.

Bass players do all kinds of weird things like boiling their strings, putting them in the oven, dishwasher, etc, just to extend maybe 4 more hours of play. And you thought guitar players were odd.

SRV strung his strats with barbed wire.

The results? His fretboard bled PHATness

Nuff Said.

I Have a freind that is so tight, he boils his strings so to use them again. My question to him was. How do you get the guitar in the pot..;)
Yet His tone was unbelievable... Figure that one out ?
