Q: How do you know you've entered the second half of your life span? A: You re-discover Pink Floyd.

Please guys: How do I get at least close to the Strat sound David Gilmour boasts on those incredible renditions of Comfortably Numb and On the turning away which we find all over youtube? I mean the versions on Pulse and Delicate sound of thunder?

As you know I own an '82 Squier Strat that isn't all bad. I'm NOT going to buy one of those custom shop David Gilmour Strats for 3000€ for this. I have the Line 6 effects and amps packs for Gearbox.

So how do I dial in that sweetness? Please... I cant believe it, but at my advanced age I'm about to learn the CN solo by heart!

i use the plexi jump lead for that sound
gain 10 bass 6 middle, treble and presence on 10 volume on 5.5
line 6 compressor: threshold 0 db and gain about 2 oclock
you will probably have to reduce the presence and treble.
but thats my setting for gilmour sound

Red, I have some Gilmour tones that I think come pretty close. I can send them to you if you want. i tend to use the Hiwatt.....And no you don't need a custom shop special. However, you might struggle with the Squier as it will have ceramic pups and most of the older strats use Alnicos. However, even with the ceramics should should still be able to come close, you just need to dial some of the distortion out cos the cermaics are hotter.

solo or rhythm parts? I assume solo. I would try the cornford (conner 50)- it has a real brit honk characteristic yet still has balls. Just as an experiment, try triple tracking it panned center, right and left or however you need to do it to not have to much losing the rhythm track. One clean, one brit, then I would dial in a bit of another amp like a soldano, or diety, diety's son, or MS crim to fill out the edginess.

David Gilmour used WEM (Watkins Electric Music) amps back in the days. Don't know if there's a VST plug or Line 6 Amp model capable of modelling that.

oh and delay, rev as appropriate, definitely a slight bit of a long tap. I like to use one of the mutli's doubled, then add desired ambiance for a different effect.

Its kind of a vox sound., but I do not believe the Vox modelers will get what you want even with various dist boxes. Page used Watkins too, they had a nice funky delay as well.

He he he, this could be fun, we could have a Gilmour tone contest or a big argument. Anyways, I've just tried Tom and Triks suggestions and reckon the Hiwatt (Hiway in Gearbox and Podfarm) is way better; richer, more body and yet cleaner. Add a touch of classic distortion, some light verb, compression and delay and you'll be damn close. Jouni, he used WEM (old Brit make) cabinets but Hiwatt amps....:

Hiwatts are pretty clean and not too high gain, but they have a lot more body than the Conner or Plexi jum (to my ears).

We could always swap Podfarm patches as a test....

Hey, they're making a reissue of the Watkins Dominator..kinda pricey, be interesting to see the street price.

yeah, the Connor - Cornford is likely too honkey. Possibly the Soldano has more depth. I do not use the Hiwatt very often but I have a couple patches about for it.
anyways, getting off topic.

Tom, the Hiway is one of my fav amps. If you want I can send you a great patch using it for a sweet, sweet lead tone. Have a listen to this song of Triks where I use the Hiwatt to try and get a Paul Kossoff (after Free sound, when solo). It's the first solo. Mind you Trik and TZ's sound is great on this as well.

you took the first solo? You know, we should start a section for a sticky featuring our fav patches if it has not been done so already..kinda like a L6 without actually having the patch, just offering up the settings since everyone's guitar and style vary.

Red, you can get the actual setting here for each song; might help:

Although to be honest the classic distortion will be better than the big muff....

I've always wondered why there wasn't SOMETHING that allowed for this here at Sonoma (because in rifflink, it would be fantastic to set, and grab, the L6 tones used for a particular riff). I know that sonoma isn't L6, and they'd probably have to pay L6 for such a treat (maybe not, maybe L6 would love the free publicity), but it would be really cool either way!

In the meantime though, we could always make do with customtone.com. The first couple of RL projects I posted, I uploaded the tones I used to customtone.com and just told people where to get it. If there were a way for Sonoma to give us a place to put a link in each riff (A RIFFLINK, GET IT? AHHAHAHAHAHA uhum), we could just upload the tone we used for a specific riff to customtone.com and just link to it directly from the riff (RIFFLINKING! GET IT? AHAHAHAHHHAHAHAHA)....
