Those things look like the residual blowout from a semi... very deceptive. Being we don't have these in the midwest, one has to wonder if they're like bears, being more scared of you if you make enough noise in advance.

I'd rather run across a gator any day. You can wrestle a gator. Ever see someone successfully wrestle a full grown bear?

Good point, but bears are more skittish, especially in territory that is not typically 'theirs' (altho, I'm not going to argue with the bear over whose territory it really is) When in the same zone with a bear you have two initial options, you scare them or you play dead. Generally, if you make enough noise, they scat.

Not sure if gators resting in the sun are akin to like snapping turtles...more apt to slip back into the water or possible figure 'hmm, dinner is coming to me'.

Hmmm, maybe there are exceptions to all these theories, this is a 28 footer, the game warden walking by is 6' 5" !!!!!

It would probably have made a meal of the hiker, the biker and the bike ;)
