Cell phones and other wireless devices. What's your take on this stuff. I havn't even owned a cell yet I'm way behind the times, but all wireless devices work in the same manner. Other countries are doing the responsible thing, but USA and Canada are lagging behind. Apparently it is very bad to live right near a cell phone tower too.

i'm not sure about that article.
it said 100mil people died from smoking in the 20th
century,

"According to WHO report, 100 million people
have died from tobacco use in the 20th century,
and 10 times as many will die in the 21st century.
Could cell phones cause as many casualties?
Do we really want to wait and find out?"

i have a hard time with that, anyway, my cousin
died of a massive brain tumor, he was being treated
for lukiemia! they didn't know until the autopsy!

he had the mobiles and cells way back in the early
80's for his trucking biz. constantly on them
with the drivers and clients etc.

i remember even then there were warnings about them.

yes, i believe that's what killed him.

on the other hand, i have 3 in
my desk and a new sony ericsson cybershot, that
is my main. not top of the line in cells but
i read the news, watch tv, play games, japanese AV,
listen to music and it has a
great camera in it.

i never seen so many cell phones as
when i moved here to hong kong.
i've counted up to 7 cells in a taxi the driver
had to get calls for fares, 2-3 going
off at the same time, piss me off.
it's being addressed by the government as being
a hazard.

my wife lives on them and she has been
using them for along time.
me, about 10yrs now.

the batteries can explode, killed
one poor guy, crappy loud ringtones,
morons talking at the top of their lungs and
not even in english,
they start fires while fueling up at the gas
station and there are vids of them popping
popcorn.

all that EM can't be good for animals or us.
but i wouldn't want to give them up.
i think they are getting safer, i hope.
or we can just sue for 2nd hand EM exposure.

wi-fi is a government thing to put wireless for
pc's
all around the city. i think starbucks is behind
the scheme. maybe free up some tables for real
customers.

cells are here to stay tho. get one, cheap and
portable and fun.

It's a little unnerving. They aren't getting any safer though, since the networks and traffic increase, the phones are getting more and more powerful, more ghz, more electromagnetic fields.

They do have Psychological effects, especially for kids.
Having everyone around an address book entry away does hamper own decisiveness.

hmm, or does it ,they don't usually call to ask when they pick first bottle of beer or something thing worse. ;)

I do have a cell but don't use it much. just kept it for emergencies, don't know much about it other than how to make and take a call.
My trusty old wired phone does just good enough for me without aggravating my migraine.

but again' who's to blame if people can't decide between Want and Need.

I don't know, I'm thinking I like my mood altering substances to be voluntary and more tasty than a magnetic field near my brain. I see small children using all kinds of wireless devices.

dispite all the audio gear, and technology in my life, I refuse to get a cell phone (my girlfriend HATES this). why? people get on my nerves with cell phones. Ive had friends pause movies for whole a whole get together so they could send a few text messages. sitting in the movie theater, people ALWAYS pull out their cell phones, and the light it makes is distracting. people talking on cell phones when driving? self explanitory, and it scares me, bwcause I KNOW FOR A FACT that the person behind the wheel is now distracted, and cannot react as quickly to upcoming situations.

worst factor of all, and this one saddens me:
cell phones split up families. when a whole family has a cell phone each, they become zombies. have you ever known a family like this? they have family outings, that end up with the whole lot going somewhere, but not interacting with each other (or anyone for that matter) because they are too busy talking or texting on their cell phones. that, to me, is really REALLY sad.

I actually feel like the only person of my generation to not have a cell phone (im 19).

now, im not sure that you can blame a brain tumor COMPLETELY on cell phone use, but it could definately factor in. think of your cell phone as a very low end microwave. now think of putting your head in a microwave. not a fun thought, eh?
truth is though, that you need to be on the phone for very extended periods to get to that level.

EDIT: not sure if people are aware, but here in canada, cell phone laws now affect car GPS systems. you may not touch the system while the car is in motion.

I like that model...just as long as it doesnt affect others.

I can see this Jason, but the point is that there is probably a load of stuff going on a round you that you can't control anyway. Science (sometimes quackery) is constantly developing and next they'll find out that trees emit radiation that kills you over a 200 year period. You can't worry about everything all the time, and often today we spend so much time trying to make our lives better, that we forget to live better lives. Yes choice is a good thing, but if you have too much choice you become unable to choose.

I can sympathise with the points Chris makes about the effect of cell phones on life itself, but really if we are really that worried about what might damage us we should never leave the house, and certainly don't go in the kitchen (major cause of deaths in the home, but keep away from stairs as well, and don't use the car either, stopping breathing as well might also be a valid suggestion (only it will also kill you)).

Stoneage man had dinosaurs to contend with, he was lucky, we've got modern life. Me? I (thankfully) can only worry about so much at one point in time.

I know too much alcohol is bad for me, but I still drink. I know road deaths on a daily basis are high, but I still drive. And now I'm told that cell phones are dangerous (probably no worse that the radiation given off by your TV to be honest), but I'll still use one. Eventually I'll die, and I'll do everything I can to put that moment off, but not to the extent that life becomes so boring it's not worth living. All things in moderation (well some more so that others).
